Cooktown, Australia, is a small frontier town in far north of Tropical North Queensland. It was founded by Captain James Cook in 1770, making it Australia's first European settlement. In the late 19th century it was established as a port for the Palmer River gold rush. With its colourful history and geographic isolation, the town boasts a unique and charming character. Until recent years, Cooktown could only be accessed by 4WD, but with the advent of the sealed Cooktown Developmental Road, it is now accessible to everyone.
The unspoilt natural beauty of this region is breathtaking. Cooktown is a fifteen minute boat ride away from the Great Barrier Reef, where scuba diving and snorkelling can provide a once in a life time experience under the sea.
Over the June, Queen's Birthday, long weekend, Cooktown hosts its annual Discovery Festival. Visitors during this time can join in on a celebration of the first recorded landing of Europeans on Australian soil. A centrepiece of the festival is a re-enactment of the landing of Captain James Cook and his crew.
For affordable accommodation in Cooktown, try the Mungumby Cooktown Shire Lodge, or the Sovereign Resort Hotel Cooktown, both of which provide an excellent base for exploring the pristine tropical surrounds.
